The proposal involves a live work space for a barber, located in Edinburgh’s New Town. In response to the overlooked nature of the site, the design focuses on an uncovered courtyard which extends vertically through the entire building. An oasis is created within the building, one which brings north light deep into the core of both the house and basement barber shop. The building’s circulation encircles this courtyard core. Luis Barragan’s Casa Gilardi, Mexico provided particular inspiration for the courtyard space and the relationship it has with the rooms of the house. A series of deliberately positioned peep hole windows are located strategically to provide specific views to the world outside.
The house and barber shop are constructed from brick. Carefully considered placement of honeycomb brickwork provides the internal spaces with light, whilst retaining a desired sense of privacy within the home. The choice of gault clay brick allows the proposal to sit harmoniously with the adjacent sandstone buildings.
