The proposal, addressing the specifics of collage, comprises a series of ‘accretions’ that support the London Festival of Architecture’s biennial Dulwich Pavilion installation. Each accretion houses a nomadic programme encompassing a gallery, residence, workshop, archive and garden restaurant. Placing communal collaboration at the fore, the proposal revives existing construction skills and knowledge through a programme that supports the long-term conception, production, construction and maintenance of the pavilion installations.
Located in the gardens of Dulwich Picture Gallery, London, on the ground of Sir John Soane’s unrealised quadrangle scheme, the proposal assembles a temporally layered conversation with context. Its structures reactivate and extend the Gallery’s current programme, whilst speaking to the architectural language of the past. Materially, pushing and pulling beyond the immaterial ground marking, the proposal speaks to the present visibility, through surfaces and site-lines, but also to the invisibility of remnants and layers that are revealed through exploratory drawings.
Tension between permanence and temporarity is expressed tectonically, through a retranslation of the arch. Recognising the blind arcades which characterise the Picture Gallery’s elevational surfaces, the barrel-vaulted retranslations imply a familiarity. Affording continued conversation with the existing, these arches spring from the site’s hidden datums, signalling the layered origins and temporality that slips across the Gallery façades.
An ethos of care and maintenance extends beyond the proposal’s programme, to its construction and materials. The use of locally reclaimed brick and construction waste material, produced in the proposal’s workshop, places the proposition in dialogue with the surfaces of the existing Gallery, and the immaterial vestiges of Dulwich’s brick making past.
